Description Shriramana Sharma 2013-10-22 17:15:27 UTC
Hello. I am using Kubuntu Saucy. Since the past two Kubuntu releases, the default wallpaper has been Elarun. I noticed that on the bottom right of the screen there is a black triangular region. My screen resolution is 1366x768.

I investigated this and find that (in my Kubuntu installation) under /usr/share/kde4/apps/ksplash/Themes/Default/ all resolutions upto 1600x1200 have a smooth gradient fading to black in the bottom right whereas 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 have a black triangular artifact in the bottom right. Probably for my resolution KDE is scaling down the larger image so I see the artifact.

I am guessing this is an upstream KDE bug and not downstream Kubuntu bug since probably Kubuntu won't modify these basic wallpapers especially not in a way to introduce this bug.

I was not sure where to look under http://quickgit.kde.org/ for the repo that contains the file so I am not able to test against Git head but since Saucy has KDE 4.11.2 I think it still exists.

Wallpapers are still in svn (because git is not really suitable for large non-text files).

KDE provides only the 2560x1600 version of Elarun:
http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kde-wallpapers/Elarun/contents/images/

Can you confirm, that the other images you have are (incorrectly) cropped versions of that wallpaper?

Hi thanks for your reply.

The latest PNG from the trunk link you provided already has the artifact in the bottom right if you will observe. The screenshot in the parent directory also shows this.

Curiously, the lower resolutions provided by my distro do not have the problem. I am not sure what is happening here. Are the distros responsible for creating lower resolution versions of the wallpapers that KDE provides? If so, they apparently fixed the files for the lower resolutions but not the higher ones as I reported above.

But even if so, the upstream KDE file is indeed faulty. I just confirmed this once more by opening the 2560x1600 file from trunk using GIMP 2.8.6 that comes with Kubuntu Saucy.

I see what you mean. Your monitor gamma is decalibrated. With standard sRGB gamma, the triangle is not visible. But I agree some noise (dithering) could help here for such displays.

KDE4 art assets are no longer formally supported.
