After updating to kscreen-0.0.81 screen resolution in virtual machine too high. Reproducible: Always Actual Results: Default resolution in vmware is 800x600, kdm starts with this resolution. But when KDE starts resolution set to highest available mode 2360x1770 that don't fit in my display, so I need to scroll vm window. If I set Modes "1024x768" in xorg.conf kscreen ignores this setting and still changes resolution to 2360x1770. Expected Results: kscreen should not change resolution set by X server (default or what set in xorg.conf).

This is what is happening: -VMware does not provide any preferred mode -We set the higher resolution as preferred This behavior works for most people but in your case is clearly not what you wanted :/ There isn't much we can do about this I'm afraid, what would be the alternative set it to the minimum resolution? pick one in the middle? From the Xorg log it seems that it is the vmware driver deciding to set 800x600 as a resolution but not based in anything we can use. Maybe we can try to report a bug for vmware and see what happens? ideally they should set 800x600 as preferred if it is what they want.
Why kscrenn tries to cjange mode which already set by X server? That mode already takes into account driver and monitor capabilities or Modes line from xorg.conf which also ignored by kscreen.
When there is one screen that is true, but Xorg does not care about multiple screens (it clones them using the minimum common resolution). So what we can do perhaps is modifying the configuration only when Xorg is not capable of doing what we want it to do. About xorg.conf I sincerely do not care much, it is something normal users should not know about.
(In reply to comment #6) > About xorg.conf I sincerely do not care much, it is something normal users > should not know about. Settings in xorg.conf is only way to set mode system-wide instead of setting it for each system user So it would be nice if kscreen prefer modes from xorg.conf if they exists.
Maybe we could blacklist resolution change in vmware (and possibly virtualbox and qemu?) Detecting vmware and vbox should simple: lsmod | grep -E "vmware|vbox" should work. Qemu/KVM however does not have any guest modules IIRC.
We can't really know if a mode is added from Xorg or manually (as far as I know). Will try to figure out something for not changing the resolution in case we only have one screen and test it in vmware. Which version of VMware are you using? (i will setup the same to do testing).
You can use qemu with vmware vga with the same behavior. qemu-kvm -vga vmware -m 1024 -cdrom Fedora-Live-KDE-i686-19-Alpha-1.iso
kscreen-1.0 still don't have fix for this bug?
Nope sorry :/
For 1.1 we will respect the settings in case there is only one screen since most of the times drivers get that case right. 1.1 is scheduled for 4 of August (more or less) I will try to have the patch done sooner.
Current summary could use improvement so that a search for ignored or disobeyed xorg.con* in bug summaries would find it, saving potential load on bug triage team.

Thinking about this, I would argue that if you don't want screen auto-configuration and use xorg.conf instead, you should not use KScreen at all. Simply disable the KScreen 2 service in System Settings- > Startup and Shutdown -> Service Manager. I think it's beyond our capabilities to parse xorg.conf(.d/*) just to check whether user is enforcing something that we should not override.
On installed system display can be configured and KScreen 2 disabled but I always have this problem on live images where KScreen 2 can't be disabled when it starts.
(In reply to Daniel Vrátil from comment #16) > disable the KScreen 2 service in System Settings- > Startup and Shutdown -> Service Manager. Where exactly? in SS 5.2.2's startup & shutdown I don't see any such thing as service manager, or anything containing string kscreen among things that are there.
(In reply to Felix Miata from comment #18) > Where exactly? in SS 5.2.2's startup & shutdown I don't see any such thing > as service manager, or anything containing string kscreen among things that > are there. In 5.11.0 on Rawhide I still don't see anything in startup & shutdown about any such thing as a service manager. Xrandr in startup script is being overridden too. Which config file contains a switch to turn off kscreen so that it can be preconfigured never to be enabled? My config in /etc/X11 exists for good reason, and needs to be obeyed unless *expressly* overridden.
Thank you for the bug report. Unfortunately we were not able to get to it yet. Can we ask you to please check if this is still an issue with Plasma 5.25 or 5.26? If it is, please change the status to CONFIRMED when replying. If not, or if you can't because you no longer use this setup, you can change the status to RESOLVED WORKSFORME. Thanks a lot!
