Description gedgon 2012-05-06 19:31:13 UTC
Dolphin used (before KDE SC 4.6 ?) to remember view settings for each tab/splitted window separately with "common view properties for all folders".

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set "Use Common view properties for all folder"
2. Press Ctrl+1 for "Icon view mode"
3. Open New Tab and press Ctrl+3 for "Details"
4. Switch to previous tab and move to parent directory (view has changed to last setting from tab #2)

Thanks for the report. To be honest, I don't think that this is a bug. If I use the "Use Common view properties for all folders" setting, and I then actively change the "view mode" setting, I expect that this setting affects all folders, i.e., that any folder which is opened in the following has the new view mode.

Well, I can't agree. I'm using common view, bacause my current view setting depends on my workflow, not direcory content. Very often I have the same direcory in mixed view setting (icons/icons+preview/details w/o preview) opened in many tabs, and current behavior is very annoying. Also, Dolphin is the only FM, as far as I know, that behaves this way.

I think that adding "Default View" setting on startup should satisfy users who likes current behavior.

Best regards

I usually always agree with Frank, but in this case I share the opinion of gedgon ;-)

To me the current behavior is not very consistent from a users point of view: If changing the "common view properties"-setting should be valid for all open views, then we should apply it _immediately_ to all views and not just after changing a directory like we do now.

But I think it is quite common for people that use the "common view properties"-setting to work like gedgon, so that a view keeps its "view-properties"-state until it gets changed when having the focus.

OK, I see that you do have a point. I'm still not fully convinced that the solution you are suggesting is better, but I don't change the view mode often anyway, and I would assume that this is also the case for most other users who have the "Common view properties" setting enabled, so I think that it won't cause much harm.

Resetting assignee to default as per bug #305719

Can you please confirm this is still an issue with the most recent version of Dolphin.

Still reproducible in 20.08.2

Can also reproduce, thanks for re-testing.

This bug has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks. It's nice to see that it USED to be the behavior for the configuration I had set.

PLEASE either fix it (so that individual tabs do not 'update' the behavior of other tabs that are already open)
OR add a new mode

Currently === Settings -> Dolphin -> General -> Behavior (tab) has only two view modes:

"Use common display style for all folders"
"Remember display style for each folder"

NEITHER captures my use case!!!

What I really want is the ability to set one DEFAULT style (and only manually update that!) and then for

"Use common display style for all folders"
"Every tab retains it's own style" <<< what I want
"Remember display style for each folder"

For all _three_ choices there should be a distinct option as well:

View Style Default:
"As configured at compile time"
"As updated by view -> set as Default Style" (a new menu option in the view lists)
"Remember the last view style modification as default"

This isolates what the setting is from when to apply the setting.
