I have no idea what the previous bug number was because I cant seem to find anything on bugs.kde.org including bugs that I have filed and were either closed prematurely or assigned as duplicates and never fixed. The issue with the kmix mute STILL DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY and i cant find the old bug so good luck not that anyone is even going to fix it. The icon DOES reflects the correct mute state, however the check box in the right click context menu of the icon does NOT reflect the correct mute state. Simply left click on the icon, mute via the volume popup, then right click the icon and observe the wrong value for mute in the context menu.
Please test with KDE4.8.3 - it might be fixed there, and report back after the test.

updating summary to match reality
KMix context menu does not reflect Mute status. Confirming this on KMix 4.1 using KDE 4.8.5. Possibly related reports: Bug 291163 - KMix shows as always muted in systray and mouse wheel up sets always 5% sound
