Description S. Burmeister 2011-01-23 11:20:53 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.95)
OS: Linux

Currently kpackagekit/apper uses a monochromatic icon which is ok for signaling "there are updates". It does not stand-out but it's there.

However for security fixes it needs something that stands out i.e. an alarm icon with e.g. a signal colour spot or something different that gets the attention of the user.

Reproducible: Always

I belive i made the allarm one have a red dot... the make it difrent from the other ones that are all monochrome. the problem with "it dosent stand out enough" is that it is relative. i have this bug for most of the apps in the tray, everybody thinks theyir app/system notification is the most important one, i do belive this one is more important than most and thats the reason I included a hint of color in it....
Can you show me a screnshot of the security fixes icon to see if the one I made is beeing used? might be the problem....

At first KPackgekit should be possible using the Plasma icon theming engince since there is a KPackagekit.svgz in the /usr/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/default/icons (or so) folder showing a monochrome gear but it isn‘t used at the moment. I think Kpackagekit should use a similar notification style like the new mail notifier uses. So the icon gains a green (or yellow) lighting effect if there are updates available and a red one if there are security updates. Or maybe we can re-use/adapt network manager‘s style to have an overlay icon for this purpose.

I'll have to check whether my self-compiled apper installed correctly maybe that solves the issue of not using the apparently existing monochrome + signal icon.

The effect described to colour the whole icon sounds even better. That would be an apper bug though and thus this would need to be re-assigned.

I think this gear that is present in the files is not yet being used and does not feature any particular status icons (updating package list, downloading packages, etc) it's just a plain gear. I'll provide a mockup based on the notiifiers green glow effect once I'm back at home :)

while the icons look really nice, I think the singal is too tiny to be obvious. Thus colouring the whole icon would help to improve the signaling effect.

Mockup for various kpackagekit icons

Okay, I think I downloaded those icons from kde-look and they are not an essential part of KDE itself, sorry. But still bad that kpackagekit is not using this API at the moment.
So, I took the notifier‘s glow effect and copied it in. Okay, this goes beyond this bug report but I think the ideas are okay.

@ S. Burmeister the problem is that every single app in the try thinks exactly the same way every one asks me the exact same thing.... I can try to make it a bit more intrusive but not painting it completly in a color... juts becouse that would meen tat i would need to start doing the same for other notifications... starting a contest for the one screaming out louder for atention...

as far as oxygen/plasma icons is concerned I consider this bug closed .... (the make it a litle bit more intrusive is a detaill I can do later)

Then please re-assign it to kpackagekit/apper.

It might be that everybody asks you, but as you mentioned already security updates are important and thus they need a proper signal and not just some 5 pixel red dot. Just think about old people, they won't even notice the dot and those who do not see red won't notice nothin anyway.

Thus a more obvious signal is needed and to repeat myself, this is not about some chat app or email or whatever but security updates.

It would be handy if apps could simply either put some overlay icon on the "normal" ones or at least some colour shade. That way no other icons were needed only changing some colour channel.

Well, with two minutes of inkscape I came up with this:
http://666kb.com/i/bwz6qazvertu07d10.jpg
(It looks way better in the panel than in inkscape :P)
The green one is just "New Updates available" (similar to Kubuntu's email notifier which also turns green), and the red one is the Security Updates thing. Don't know what the lock icon is for, though.
