Version: 1.0 (using KDE 4.5.2) OS: Linux Installing a new theme via "Get New Themes" (and probably via "Install new theme" too) doesn't work, because the sudo authentication is done after pressing apply, until that everything is done as the non-root user, who has no write permission to /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes . Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: click get themes and click install on a theme. Actual Results: nothing happens, expect for the "installed" theme's install button becomes uninstall. Expected Results: the new theme should be installed and listed to be selected. OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.35-22-generic Compiler: cc I'm not sure if it's a kubuntu specific bug.

Still a problem under 4.6.0.
Still a problem under 4.6.1!!! Someone plz fix this.
Consider how especially maddening it must be for new users who try to install a new login theme and then don't see it appear. This bug needs to be squashed, badly.
Can you please tell me what to do with this please? Got bitten by that fscking bug !
Still a bug in 4.7.0.
This bug is still in Kubuntu 11.10 Beta 1.
Since I am currently overhauling the entire KDM Theme selection dialog, I will have a look at this issue in the next few days. Maybe I can achieve something similar like the “Apply button with the key icon” on the main dialog, dunno if GHNS supports something like that though. I’ll see what I can do.
Up ! ^
Present in Kubuntu 11.10 final release, with KDE 4.7.2. The bug is really maddening! I don't like having to `kdesudo systemsetting` for a workaround. But, new users are bound to use this often, and get hit by it. It's really frustrating. :(
I second James Roe. What a pain in the posterior! How hard can this be?

Hey, I'm newly found this bug in Kubuntu 11.10, KDE 4.7.4. And it's still not fixed. We'll work without themes! It's a pity ^(
I confirm this on gentoo linux with systemsettings-4.7.4
Thank you it has been fixed On Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 1:42 AM, cyberbat <cyberbat83@gmail.com> wrote: > https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255453 > > > cyberbat <cyberbat83@gmail.com> changed: > > What |Removed |Added > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- > CC| |cyberbat83@gmail.com > > > > > --- Comment #26 from cyberbat <cyberbat83 gmail com> 2012-02-14 07:41:58 > --- > I confirm this on gentoo linux with systemsettings-4.7.4 > > -- > Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email > ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- > You are on the CC list for the bug. >

Problem still exists on 4.8.1
problem still exists on 4.8.2 - really annoying, guys :(
annoying +1.
on kubuntu 12.04 "sudo systemsettings" does the job, at least partially, some of the other themes can be loaded then, and also work. But quite a few ones are not possible to load at all, some fcked up links or alike with appropriate messages.. guys, this is quite a mess, and after such a long time still an resolved issue, for such a trivial thing, wow..

Also having this problem on Arch Linux with KDE 4.9.0 As a workaround, I can chmod o+w /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes and System Administration -> Login Screen -> Theme -> Get New Themes will install kdm themes.

Bug confirmed against 4.9.2 ... Not even a warning message :)

I want to confirm that this is still present in 4.10.0. My suggestion is that it should ask for root permissions before installing them.
I have this bug with KDE 4.10.2 :(
I have this bug with KDE 4.10.3 :(

Still here in 4.11.3? Why would I want to switch to KDE when this is a rather obvious bug that's been outstanding for over 3 years? I am being affected by this bug in KDE 4.11.3 on Fedora 20 TC3.
That's what I really hate in KDE. Loads of bugs, very well identified, reported for years, confirmed and re-confirmed... And nobody ever gives a shit about fixing them. KDE bug tracker is managed by Dave Null... So yeah, this bug has been outstanding for more than 3 years. Holy shit.
This bug is still present in version 4.12.3. Quite annoying. Over and over and over I have to help new users tackle this bug. Some of them even left KDE due to this.
It's still present in KDE 4.12.4
I believe KDE bugs are considered "digital art" and are not meant to be fixed. Ever.
I think the kde developers should re-evaluate their decision that bugs are digital art and consider fixing them. It would make the software easier to use for people.

Please stop polluting the bug tracker. This bug is not easy to fix with the current infrastructure. If you believe otherwise, provide a patch.

kdm reached it's end of life with Plasma 4, whose last bugfix release was last August 2015, we are sorry we did not get to fix this bug. We encourage you to try Plasma 5 and its recommended display manager SDDM and it's control module kcm_ssdm. And please do not hesitate to file bugs against it if you find any. Sorry again we could not fix your bug.
