It looks like it is the same behaviour as if I enter a wrong password. But the field for the username does not get repainted correctly. P.S.: If I've entered a wrong password the field does get repainted correctly.
please specify which theme you are using. a screenshot (photo) would be helpful as well.
It is the oxygen-theme, which is used after the standard installation of kubuntu 9.04 (kde 4.2.2). That's what is defined in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc: UseTheme=true Theme=/usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/oxygen Sorry but I don't know how to take a screenshot of kdm.
the camera of a mobile would probably do ... anyway, the direct way to make a screenshot is running "Xephyr -query localhost :1" and snapshotting that window. you need to have xdmcp enabled (in kdmrc) and a sufficiently permissive access rule (in Xaccess) to do that.

hmm, i can't reproduce the non-repainting. do you have compositing enabled? which qt version do you use? but the resizing of the dialog when the label appears is a problem by itself ...
In systemsettings compositing is set to OpenGL. The QT-version is 4.5.0-0ubuntu4. That's the version which is listed by 'apt-cache show libqt4-gui' for example.
does the problem persist?
KDM is unmaintained and not used in KDE Plasma 5. SDDM is the login manager used in KDE Plasma 5. If you still have this same issue with SDDM, please file an issue on the SDDM bugtracker (after doing a search for existing issues first!): https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/
