Description Oliver Henshaw 2009-03-19 21:48:17 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Fedora RPMs

I followed a link to a guardian article from a bbc blog. The article appeared in the internal browser, but disappeared before loading completed.

The blog article is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2009/03/bbc_moderation_the_law_and_cen_2.html and comes from the feed http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/rss.xml (which is set to "Load the full website when reading articles"). The newspaper article is linked from "Peter Wilby makes a good case for the Alfie Patten restrictions" (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/feb/23/sun-newspaper-13-year-old-alfie).

The article appears, together a sidebar and a page header - the page looks fully loaded, but the progress bar is not filled. Then the page disappears from the tab and is replaced by a blank space with only the line:

%7B%22ResponseBatch%22%3A%7B%22Messages%22%3A%5B%7B%22Message%22%3A%22ok%22%2C%22MessageTime%22%3A%2203/19/2009%2008%3A00%3A29%3A766%20PM%22%7D%5D%2C%22Responses%22%3A%5B%7B%22CommentPage%22%3A%7B%22ArticleKey%22%3A%7B%22Key%22%3A%22343605267%22%7D%2C%22NumberPerPage%22%3A%2210%22%2C%22OnPage%22%3A%225%22%2C%22Comments%22%3A%5B%5D%2C%22Sort%22%3A%22TimeStampAscending%22%2C%22NumberOfComments%22%3A%2216%22%7D%7D%5D%2C%22MemberSites%22%3A%5B%5D%7D%7D

Following the link (bbc page -> guardian page) from within konqueror (or firefox) works without any problems.

backtrace from crash on "Detach Tab" in internal browser

Furthermore, the first time I saw this I tried to "Detach Tab" on the blank page and triggered a crash (attached). I could not reproduce this a second time, though.

In case it's relevant: In akregator, I have "For External Browsing"->"Use default browser" and in System Setting->Default Applications I have "Open http and https URLs"->"in the following browser"->"mozilla-firefox".

This still happens, but now I can consistently reproduce it. I'll attempt to describe this below.

http://feeds.guardian.co.uk/theguardian/profile/charliebrooker/rss is a feed of Charlie Brooker's articles. There are two types of articles: "Screen Burn" which is about tv and does not have comments; feature articles which are part of "Comment is free" and have comments loaded via javascript. The second type of article fail to load as described in comment 1.

This second type of article can easily be identified, as the article title in the feed view always begins "Charle Brooker | " rather than "Charlie Brooker's screen burn. When loaded in the web view, the message "In order to see comments, please turn JavaScript on in your browser." is seen near the bottom of the page - this is expected, since javascript is disabled in the web view.

When the page is loaded in a browser tab within akregator, the page appears to load fully and a javascript rendered loading bar appears where the comments should go. Before the comments appear the page is replaced by a blank page with similar text to that reported in comment 1. Pressing the back icon takes me back to the article page, which again redirects to the blank page before comments complete loading.

Again, the page loads successfully in konqueror. The problem is only seen in an akregator browser tab.

I can't reproduce this anymore (with kde 4.3.5). Given that comments now appear in the akregator article webview, it looks like the guardian comments system has changed at some point and no longer uses javascript.

There may still be a bug, but there's no way to reproduce it anymore.
