Version: 4.2 (using Devel) OS: Linux Installed from: Compiled sources I cannot move icons in the panel using drag-and-drop as I could with KDE 3.5. This is a regression.
Sure you can; make sure to have the widget unlocked, then right click on the panel and select "panel configuration". Then you can freely move then with dragging.
Sorry, this worked with KDE 3.5 out of the box and with KDE 4.2 I have to do non-obvious steps to accomplish it? This is a regression bug. The user expects KDE 4.2 to be better than 3.5, but here, it is not. How do I make sure the widget is unlocked? To illustrate this a bit, we are offering a service where users can log in to an NX server running KDE 3.5. We have about 500 users. We will not upgrade to KDE 4 as long as issues like this are around. I do not want to answer 500 phone calls asking "how can I move an icon in the panel".
..not that i am opposed to innovations but have to admit the kicker applet handles (and a LOT of other concepts and functionality from it) really were much more intuitive and very pleasant to use...
Have I missed something? Where is the innovation? (No, it is NOT an innovation that it is QT4 based, I am talking about changes that make life easier for the USER)
I am a USER and I AM SATISFIED with the new way to move applets in the panel. With the new mechanism you are able to move the applets in the panel much more easily without right clicking (which is good for devices with touchscreens). The cashew in the panel is unlocked by defaults, which means that users will easily find how to move them. Always sticking to old solutions can sometimes make users happier, but surely doesn't mean "innovating". Users that are not ready to use their mind in a more flexible way are advised to stick with old deskop paradigms. IMHO adding a "Move this «applet name»" that does the same as clicking on the panel cashew could be a solution, but what about all the other panel options? Maybe this could be discussed together with the right click menu organization.
I remember that you could lock KDE 3 panel in KDE 3.5, but that is not the issue. In unlocked mode, every Plasmoid could have a little handle that you can drag freely in unlocked mode. It is reasonable and it is like KDE 3.5. Personally, I like the new way because it makes impossible to move applets without my consent (I HATE undesired applet movements like I had in GNOME and KDE 3.5 sometimes). But you may want the choice.
BTW, read http://www.joelonsoftware.com/uibook/chapters/fog0000000059.html . After reading it, I LOVE the new way of moving panels. The old one allows crap like this: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/uibook/pictures/Whoops_I_Did_it_Again.gif . The new one does not.
Please, it's not a regression bug just because we changed the behavior. It's a new way of doing things and just as users learned how to right click in the past, they will learn about the cashew. Of course we can improve documentation but this is definitely not a bug.
