Description:
The server bugs.kde.org refused to allow this computer to make a connection.
Possible Causes:
The server, while currently connected to the Internet, may not be configured to allow requests.

A network firewall (a device which restricts Internet requests), either protecting your network or the network of the server, may have intervened, preventing this request.
Possible Solutions:
Try again, either now or at a later time.
Contact the administrator of the server for further assistance.
Contact your appropriate computer support system, whether the system administrator, or technical support group for further assistance.

This has been happening sense KDE 4.0.x but I did not think anything to report it then because I figured it was still underdevlopment but now that KDE 4.1 is out and the same thing is happening, I have to admit though the error screen in 4.1 is alot more verbose then it was in 4.0.x. This "unknown error" is not a uncommon thing with my desktop, it happens in not only Konqueror but with Kmail when trying to fetch mail from my POP3 account, Knode when trying to access a server to fetch or send new articles, and pretty much every other thing built for KDE 4 that uses the web. I know its not my connection because KDE 3 apps and Firefox do the same task perfectly. If I need to open separate bug reports for every application that is giving me this problem then I will be happy to do so.

Sounds lower level. One report is fine. ;)
Comment 2 A. Spehr 2008-08-02 01:55:18 UTC
thiago also just verified this.

Can you detect any kind of pattern?

Thanks!
Comment 3 Sergei Andreev 2008-08-03 13:54:00 UTC
I remember such errors are begining to show up after some other kde-applications have been crashed:
in my case they are klipper, ktorrent, akregator
Comment 4 Adam Jimerson 2008-08-04 21:48:44 UTC
No pattern as of yet, it happens about 70% of the time.
Comment 5 Peter Faasse 2008-08-05 15:34:19 UTC
On my build of kde-4.1.0, i can reproduce this 100% of the time with the url

http://www.distrowatch.com

No previous crashes of any kde-app required. The status line does 'diplay' 'retrieving 334 B from www.distrowatch.com' for a while, then the error shows.

With a little pattern data:

- if i select my router as 'nameserver' in /etc/resolv.conf, then the problem happens with konqueror.
- if i copy the IP addresses of the nameservers that my router gets from my ISP into my local /etc/resolv.conf, then the problem is gone...

NB: the same machine, using iceweasel as browser has no problems with either setting.
Comment 6 Adam Jimerson 2008-08-06 14:52:33 UTC
I can confirm the problem loading http://www.distrowatch.com ever time I try and load it I run into the problem
Comment 7 Thiago Macieira 2008-08-06 15:11:01 UTC
I can't confirm. Distrowatch works fine here.
Comment 8 Adam Jimerson 2008-08-06 16:34:24 UTC
Other things that I have problem loading that result in this unknown error:

Konqueror (doing 5 refreshes before added the list): http://www.opensuse.org (some times it does work), http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/faq.html#SEC19, http://www.kdevelop.org/phorum5/index.phphttp://www.freeos.com/guides/lsst/, http://xkcd.com/424/, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820133012, http://www.userfriendly.org (it did connect long enough to download the favcon before I got the unknown error), http://tuxsticker.ptaff.ca/step1/?lang=en_CA

Kmail (pop3): mail.charter.net

Knode: forums.novell.com

Akregator: http://news.opensuse.org/?feed=rss2, http://www.novell.com/newsfeeds/rss/inthenews.xml, http://www.novell.com/prblogs/?feed=rss2, http://www.novell.com/linux/security/suse_security.xml, http://www.kde.org/dotkdeorg.rdf, http://www.kde.org/dot/kde-apps-content.rdf, http://www.kde.org/kde-look-content.rdf

My exact KDE version is Version 4.1.1 (KDE 4.1.0 (4.1 >= 20080722)) "release 21.

If it helps I am using a laptop using wireless Internet, but again KDE 3 apps and non KDE apps such a firefox load everything with no problem.
Comment 9 Adam Jimerson 2008-08-14 01:05:42 UTC
Any update on this? Are you still having trouble running into this problem?
Comment 10 Maksim Orlovich 2008-08-14 01:13:44 UTC
Re: #9 --- basically, this sort of problems usually happens when your router isn't happy w/o our DNS requests. Which is why as comment #5 says, using
the ISPs DNS usually works. And as a corollary, those of us w/o problematic routers do not have the problem...

Comment 11 Adam Jimerson 2008-08-14 21:59:25 UTC
1. What is different from the way KDE 4 apps handle DNS requests than KDE 3 apps, because as I said KDE 3 apps work fine

2. So basically I have to give up on the dream of KDE 4 and stay with KDE 3, because buying a new router is not an option for me.
Comment 12 Adam Jimerson 2008-08-14 22:16:51 UTC
Also if it is a DNS problem when what could explain the fact that IMAP is 100% reliable with Kmail when everything else is not?
Comment 13 Thiago Macieira 2008-08-14 22:29:54 UTC
The difference is that we may send the same request twice, with different IDs, without waiting for the answer for the first one. Your router is broken and gets confused by that.

But that's bug 162600.

That's unrelated to this bug here. I believe this one has to do with timeouts.
Comment 14 Adam Jimerson 2008-08-18 22:02:29 UTC
Last night was the first time Konqueror did timeout that it was able to tell, instead of getting the "unknown error" it actually gave a timeout error here is a copy and paste from what it said if it helps:

The requested operation could not be completed
Timeout Error
Details of the Request:
URL: http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/?gmode=myguilds
Protocol: http
Date and Time: Sunday 17 August 2008 7:47 pm
Additional Information: www.gaiaonline.com
Description:
Although contact was made with the server, a response was not received within the amount of time allocated for the request as follows:
Timeout for establishing a connection: 20 seconds
Timeout for receiving a response: 600 seconds
Timeout for accessing proxy servers: 10 seconds
Please note that you can alter these timeout settings in the KDE Control Center, by selecting Network -> Preferences.
Possible Causes:
There may have been a problem at some point along the network path between the server and this computer.
The server was too busy responding to other requests to respond.
Possible Solutions:
Try again, either now or at a later time.
Contact the administrator of the server for further assistance.
Comment 15 Adam Jimerson 2008-10-19 20:00:43 UTC
Well if it helps the wireless router that I have is a Belkin Wireless G Router (this one to be exact http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=136493) but I was able to reproduce this "unknown error" in a weird way after my system locked up with a open Konqueror I logged back into KDE and restored the Konqueror session, which it loaded before the system was able to connect to the wireless and it came back with the same unknown error. I am using NetworkManager with the KDE 3 version of KNetworkManager if this could cause some of the problem.

Another datapoint:

I'm seeing this as well, most notably on konqueror and from within akregator, where it makes reading newsfeeds almost impossible.

Requests for websites would fail, the pages only loading after repeated cycles of 'reload / cancel / reload / etc.'.
As soon as I changed my DNS from the one supplied by my ISP (Arcor, Germany) to e.g. OpenDNS, all problems went away.

I never had theses problems with KDE 3, and I seem to remember that I didn't have them initially after upgrading my Fedora8 to Fedora10 - unfortunately, I cannot remember after which update the problem started.

Fedora 10 on x64
KDE 4.1.3
Fritz!Box DSL router
ISP: Arcor (Germany)

Cannot reproduce. Feel free to reopen this ticket if you can reproduce the problem in KDE 4.9 or higher.
