Description John Horne 2008-06-30 00:00:27 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.5)
Installed from: Fedora RPMs
Compiler: gcc-4.3.0-8.x86_64
OS: Linux

Bug initially reported at Fedora bugzilla site:

   https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=449280

DPMS seems to become disabled if screensavers are configured to start
automatically (via "System settings=>Desktop=>Screensaver").

The point here is that if the "Start automatically" option is not set, then it
all works as expected. The monitor goes to powersaving mode after 10 mins.
I have tried this with the default "Blank screen" screensaver, with "Science",
and with "Bubbles3D" (an xscreensaver OpenGL screensaver).

The *only* change required to make DPMS work is to unset the "Start
automatically" option.
Comment 1 John Horne 2008-07-01 12:03:53 UTC
Okay, this now seems to be working. (Note, initially this was reported when I was using KDE 4.0.4). I have upgraded kdelibs (via yum from the Fedora RPMS) to version kdelibs-4.0.5-4.fc9.x86_64.

I have tested this with 3 different screensavers; logged in and out and rebooted the PC. It works fine every time, the screensaver starts and then DPMS switches it to power-saving mode.

Not sure who changed what, but thanks :-)

The same bug exists again in KDE 4.1 beta2, please re-open.
Comment 3 John Horne 2008-07-10 00:29:48 UTC
Reopening because of comment 2.
Comment 4 Dennis Jansen 2008-07-16 00:36:21 UTC
Do you how it was fixed the first time? Maybe that just didn't go into trunk and I can make the same fix. Thanks.
Comment 5 John Horne 2008-07-16 01:15:18 UTC
Sorry, I have no idea how the initial problem was 'fixed'. All I noticed was that my monitor started to work correctly. All I can say, as above in comment #1, was that something in a change from KDE 4.0.4 to 4.0.5 (using Fedora RPMS) fixed it.
Comment 6 Dennis Jansen 2008-08-11 20:21:46 UTC
still current in 4.1... John, can you confirm this?

I can't find *anything* different in the kcontrol applet's svn logs
http://websvn.kde.org/tags/KDE/4.0.4/kdebase/workspace/kcontrol/energy/energy.cpp?view=log
http://websvn.kde.org/tags/KDE/4.0.5/kdebase/workspace/kcontrol/energy/energy.cpp?view=log

Maybe it's a fedora patch, but then they should probably have attached it to the bug report. I guess it must be in another part of then. If I only knew which...
Comment 7 John Horne 2008-08-15 01:39:48 UTC
Sorry, but the KDE 4.1 rpms are still in the Fedora 'testing' repo as far as I know. Until they move them to 'updates' my PC won't see them.

However, it seems that the DPMS has stopped working again. I'm now running
  kdelibs-4.0.5-5.fc9.x86_64
  kdebase-4.0.5-5.fc9.x86_64

Comment 8 John Horne 2008-08-19 03:08:14 UTC
Okay, I have installed the 4.1 packages from the Fedora 'updates-testing' repo.

DPMS seems to be working fine with this. As expected after a while the screensaver starts, and a bit later the monitor goes into power-saving mode.

kdelibs-4.1.0-5.fc9.x86_64
kdebase-4.1.0-1.fc9.1.x86_64
Comment 9 John Horne 2008-10-15 16:33:23 UTC
Stopped working again.

kdelibs-4.1.1-12.fc9.x86_64
kdebase-4.1.1-1.fc9.x86_64
Comment 10 Kenyon Ralph 2008-10-23 05:55:45 UTC
This is a problem also with Gentoo's KDE 4.1.2 packages. The bug report is at https://bugs.gentoo.org/242262
Comment 11 Dirk Tombaugh 2008-10-23 06:21:48 UTC
I can confirm this is true. I'm running Version 4.1.2 release 45.4 on opensuse 11. I have the same issue, no dpms with autostart screensaver.
Comment 12 John Horne 2008-10-23 18:36:12 UTC
Likewise, it's not working with the Fedora 4.1.2 packages.

kdelibs-4.1.2-5.fc9.x86_64
kdebase-4.1.2-5.fc9.x86_64

it is present in 4.1.3 (release 58.1) as well. Still running opensuse 11. With one addition, the auto-suspend feature no longer works. The screen will still power down like it is supposed to. The computer will no longer go into suspend by-itself.
Comment 16 whashnez 2008-11-21 16:38:00 UTC
Yeah same problem here Arch Linux with kde 4.1.3 DPMS does not work only when screen saver running.
Comment 17 Wade Nelson 2008-11-24 15:47:53 UTC
I can confirm this, on my laptop (Dell Inspiron B130, all Intel hardware) I can produce the following problems with the following procedures:

1) Enable screensaver with or without lock after time X
2) Close laptop -> LCD backlight turns off
3) After a second or so LCD backlight turns back on and screensaver is running

1) Enable screensaver to activate after X minutes
2) Enable Display Power Management to do *anything* after X+1 minutes
3) Display remains on with screensaver running, i.e. Display Power Management Settings have no effect.

I can reproduce this under KDE 4.1.3 on Debian Lenny with KDE4 backport (http://kde4.debian.net) and also under KDE 4.1.2 on Slackware-current.

I think perhaps Bug 156605 , Bug 165265 , Bug 170478 , and Bug 165368 all relate back to the same DPMS+screensaver=no_worky issue.
Comment 18 Szabolcs Molnar 2008-11-27 23:11:08 UTC
The same happens for me. As soon as I set the display turn off _before_ the screen saver activates, it works.

Kubuntu 8.10
KDE 4.1.3
Comment 19 Marc 2009-01-13 05:59:36 UTC
Experiencing the same issue on a Dell Vostro 1400 running ubuntu 8.10 and KDE 4.1.3.
Comment 20 Dario Freddi 2009-01-17 18:52:39 UTC
Ok, accepting this, DPMS are eventually (once again) a pain in the ass

hi guys, i m using a Benq joybook s32b and got this problem too, after trying out many settings, i discovered that the screen powers off by setting the screensavers settins to not start automaticaly in desktop settings and set power off screen to x minutes in the display settings, disable the 2 previous settings on display settings.
Comment 23 whashnez 2009-03-02 19:08:12 UTC
Ok solved in kde 4.2.1
Comment 24 John Horne 2009-03-18 00:57:36 UTC
Fedora have released 4.2.1 KDE rpms via their updates repo. This bug no longer occurs. Well done and many thanks :-)
