Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5) Installed from: SuSE RPMs Purpose: the default encoding in open-file dialog. Also it could serves as default encoding when creating new project/document/whatever. Problem: there are a lot apps which process text files -- so with this additional settings I could forget about setting encoding each time I open a file. Or use another app.
Hmm, why did it go to www.kde.org? Could someone please reassign it to Kcontrol, thanks in advance and sorry for the trouble.
As I understand it, KDE uses the system encoding as specified by the LANG environment variable, so I guess this is not needed
Philip, not true already. If KDE looks at LANG what is the purpose of defining language in KDE? But it is there and obviously for developers it has some purpose -- it is possible to set LANG to pl and language in KDE for Czech. Another thing -- the LANG env.var. came from old times and I set it mostly for all non-KDE apps so they could behave nicely -- Midnight Commander. Now I can gently differentiate LANG vs. KDE-language but the encoding is missing in KDE (it is set in LANG though). In other words I wish for full symmetry.
Is this still an issue in KDE4?
I don't know, I use KDE3.
Very old ticket, all the code has changed. Reopen if still an issue.
