Description Motin / Fredrik 2006-09-27 23:13:49 UTC
Version: 1.4.3 (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

There was an old wishlist-post on this matter at: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90844 but it was marked as INVALID because the wish was about adding a jack output plugin while the correct way was supposed to be relying on an gstreamer jack audiosink.

Since the support for jack in gstreamer is broken, it is surely time for this new wishlist item. There are a lot of users out there in forums etc that are requesting this! It is such a necessity when wanting to play along with software synthesizers and the like.

So this is a general bugreport for either a jack output plugin (preferable) or a working gstreamer jack audiosink, or for that matter any general method to get amarok to output it's audio to Jack.

Sorry, there are no plans to make any sort of JACK engine.

Too bad. So option one is out of the question. What about the two other options? Is there going to be gstreamer support for jack you know? Or is there any other way? Why close the bug if there are no other options to route amarok audio to jack?

We decided that we will not implement jack support within Amarok. In order not distract us from the really important bugs and wishes, this report was closed.

Isn't amaroK about rediscovering one's music? Then why not consider allowing the listener to play along with his favorite tunes and thus discover a whole new level of joy in his musical library?

Madman and XMMS isn't nearly as good as amaroK sadly, but until this feature is supported or worked around in some manner, amaroK remains a no-no for me and many other intstrument-playing users.

I also need Jack output to use a software room correction and active crossover (BruteFIR).

So either I could code it myself but since I have never looked inside Amarok it would probably take a lot of time. Or maybe a $100 donation to the project would add to your motivation ?

Keep up !

Please reconsider this wish list item. I also think that adding Jack output would be excellent.

Xine 1.1.3 features experimental jack output support.

Yesterday I connected Amarok on Kubuntu Feisty to jack, using the alsa jack plugin. It was actually quite easy to setup, and with this approach any application which outputs sound to alsa can connect to jack. I found this documented on the Gentoo Jack Howto.

@Andreas Philipp: That's great news! At the time of reporting the wishlist item, those instructions failed to allow Amarok output to jack.

Since the experimental xine jack output support, this seems to have changed to the better.

If you could summarize what you did more exactly this wishlist item could become truly resolved. Did you for instance find a way to start Amarok with the jackplug enabled or did you use "!default" etc?

Motin has written a nice how-to for ubuntu users:

Amarok through Jack is working great!
