Description Xushi 2006-05-05 13:24:27 UTC
Version: 0.12.15 (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
OS: Linux

K3b doesn't seem to support ISO Level 4 (9660:1999) file systems, or it's not listed in DVD -> Burn -> Advanced. It's problematic for those files/folders that have very long names (over the limit of afaik 128 or 256).
Comment 1 Sebastian Trueg 2006-05-05 14:06:59 UTC
actually, from the mkisofs manpage:
"With level 4, [...] the maximum length for files and directory is raised to
207" while Rock Rigde allows filenames of length up to 255 characters. So
nobody really needs iso4 on linux. I will add support anyway in a while but
for now the problems with verification would just get more and more....

Thanks. I didn't know that. Rock Ridge seems good enough. I'll just have to get a bit more reading done on it to see its compatibility in Windows (> XP).

Last I heard, Rock Ridge wasn't supported by Windows XP. Also, how does this affect long filenames that don't differ in the first 37 characters?

Besides, this isn't GNOME. The "advanced" section exists for a reason. It's shenanigans like this that have driven me to call mkisofs by hand more and more frequently.

I can't really believe that there are that many situations in which joliet is not enough.
And please keep sentences like "It's shenanigans like this..." to yourself or help improving K3b.

Actually, I run into cases where 103 characters isn't enough quite commonly when ripping classical music to FLAC and then pushing the flac to DVD+R.

As for the "shenanigans", my sincere apologies. I'm amazed I wrote that (especially since I don't drink coffee so I can't use "I hadn't had my morning coffee" as an excuse) and, if I can ever free up the time to learn C++, I'll gladly contribute.

I see. Well, then let me see if I can get it into 1.1

no problem. :)

I vote for this too.

I need it because i backup using k3b both my company and home's data of which
can include several files and folders inside eachother. Many are
dynamic/static html files which can have up to 30 characters in their names
each.. add that all up and you get quite a lot of characters =/

Good luck
