Description Jens Hatlak 2005-08-16 14:16:24 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.2)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
OS: Solaris

In the XDMCP Host Menu (aka kchooser), the Status column is only updated when initialized or when you manually press the Refresh button. Since that column holds valuable information like number of users and load (at least by default, see Xwilling), it would be nice if it could be updated regularly.

I suggest adding a variable to the kdmrc file allowing to specify the time in seconds after which the Status column should be updated automatically. A sensible default could be 300 (5 minutes). A value of 0 could mean 'off'.

... because we have too few options. :)

i don't see a use case for this. it even seems counter-productive: you never know how old the info is - when a group of students enters the lab, 5 minutes are a damn long time. it might be a good idea to grey out the list after half a minute or something (just clearing is no option, as it kills the preselection), so you just have to hit refresh.
what you really want is the view auto-refreshing when somebody looks at it. we can't achieve _that_, but acting upon keyboard and mouse activity should be good enough - after all, usually the screen saver (err, which one? :}) or DPMS kicks in, so you just have to do something to see the greeter, and later on you have to do something anyway (even though it is certainly a bit frustrating when the list changes after you have read it already).

OK, so maybe we could have a timer start upon inactivity. If 30 seconds have passed, any action on the host list (clicking an item, focussing it) makes the list update itself. No option. Deal?

KDM is unmaintained and not used in KDE Plasma 5.

SDDM is the login manager used in KDE Plasma 5. If you still have this same issue with SDDM, please file an issue on the SDDM bugtracker (after doing a search for existing issues first!): https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/
