When using panel notification of new messages:

This will usually show a pale icon with the number of unread messages. When there is one and only one message, unread, then a fully colored icon appears. After reading, deleting the message, the icon persists.

Not very serious :-)

KDE 4.3 uses a different icon and this effect is no longer visible.
