It would be nice if there was an alternate method for showing informational messages (ones that only require an OK button) 

Because these types of messages are only informational, there is nothing the user should have to do to continue. Instead, the message could be sent in front of all windows to a specified location on the screen, with a specified font, colour and opacity, and stay on screen for a specified period of time (like Kaffeine does). It would not take focus nor steal keystrokes. 

To ensure that a user does not miss messages that might be important, there could be a manager that records all of the messages, the timestamp and the program responsible. Something could sit in the systray to make these easily available for review.

another possibility is to scroll them across the bottom of the screen ala newsticker.

something like http://www.tickertape.org/documents/what_is_tickertape.html where messages can come in and then be reviewed.
