Description Merton Campbell Crockett 2004-11-30 19:18:57 UTC
Version: 2.2 (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

When playing the Klondike (draw 3) variant of Patience, kpat 2.2 has an irritating feature that displays a notice that you can't win. This is typically displayed at the end of the first pass through the Talon. If you click the continue button, you will "win" roughly 30 to 50 percent of the games.

Also, if there are playable cards displayed in the Talon when the message is displayed, the cards will not be played. I just played a game in which the notice was displayed at the end of the first pass through the talon. The last face-up card was playable but not played. In this instance, there were 8 cards in the face-up pile that were playable.

Occassionally, no message is displayed at the end of the first pass through the talon. In these instances, the message is never displayed regardless of how many times you go through the talon when there are no playable cards left.

For all intents and purposes, the display of the "You can't win" notice when playing Klondike (draw 3) is an indicator that the game is winnable. Unfortunately, this feature detracts from the enjoyment of the game. It should be removed.

For those that like this feature, it needs to be corrected to only display after a pass is made through the talon in which no cards were played and only after the "waste cards" are returned to the talon.

Is there a way to disable the notice?

Hi, and thanks for the extensive bug report!

In the current CVS you can click a "don't show this again" square in the dialog, so that would satisfy your last request. However, the bug itself is that the criteria for showing the message is wrong in the first place, and there already is a bug for this. (Btw, the same bug exists for at least another patience: mod3.)

So either I can close this bug as already fixed or it is a duplicate of bug 91317.

And now I fixed it.
