Version:           1.7.1 (using KDE KDE 3.3.1)
Installed from:    Gentoo Packages

When new mail arrives using timed auto-check the content window for the current message is cleared. You have to reselect the message to make the content appear again.
Its wery annoying when reading a message and a new message arrive - the message you are reading disappear.

I'm using online IMAP for the account.

Thanks for taking the time to report this. 
 The bug that you describe has been identified and fixed in the latest development (CVS) version of KDE. 
 The fix will be in the next maintainance release of KMail.
