I arrange all of my desktop icons (about 45) in 4 columns, and place them all in the center of the desktop.  When I restart KDE, some of the icons (it appears to be the ones that either have long/wide names or are next to ones with long/wide names) are repositioned to the far left of the screen, some near the top and some near the bottom.

In addition, if my session is shut down non-cleanly (say, by rebooting my system), all of the icons get arranged in seemingly random positions (still aligned to the grid) toward the top and left of the screen.

This behavior seems to have started with 3.3.  Prior to that my icons were never rearranged by KDE.

My opinion is that KDE should never rearrange icons unless the user explicitly asks (sort, align to grid, etc).  That includes if there is overlapping -- the user's choice should override any repositioning.

I Can confirm on debian unstable 3.3.1. Infact this is a very irritating problem which started from the 3.3 series.

Confirmed on KDE 3.3.1 built from the source with Konstruct.

Don't think any more confirmation is required, everybody should know this bug by now...
This sounds trivial, but it makes a terrible impression to KDE newcomers.

Bug closed. Kdesktop is no more mantained.
