It would be great if it would be possible to write and read downloaded mails in an offline mode without the dialog box appearing "Couldn't connect to xxx"

In KDE3.3 (you are running behind a lot!!!) there is support for disconnected imap, which does what you want.

not everyone has access to an imap server.
anyways, this a dupe of #7765
