Or you simply start typing, use the down arrow to navigate through the alternatives and then press Enter. Very efficient IMHO, since I do not have to type until only one alternative is left. Or even better you can just do what you want by: right mouse button on the line edit --> Text Completion --> Dropdown List & Automatic. When a functionality like this is already available then IMHO it should be the default behavior. Actually I think it should be the standard for all history comboboxes in KDE (like e.g. the address edit in konqueror). Christian Well, preferences vary on this, so the maintainer can have a look. But this bugreport was about having to use the mouse for selecting a completion which is just simply not the case. The Dropdownlist& Automatic completion has a serious usability bug for me: You have to press Del not to get a possible completion which has higher priority about what you want. IIRC, this was the reason for not making it default. kdesu yast2 online_update ^^^^^^^^^^^-------------- typed completion I have to press Del to get rid of something I didn't type. I, as many people, hate when the computer thinks it is smarter than me. With the current default I can start typing and select my wanted completion all with the keyboard. I think the reporter just missed the possibility to use the down button. What you propose, means I have to press an additional button if no completion fits. This is a serious regression. Please reconsider your proposal for changing the default Autocompletion and I suggest to open another bugreport for it, since this bugreport was about something different. Thanks to everybody for the fine remarks. But I'm a lazy guy and also I use the same applications most of the time. That means I don't have so many choices in the list, and after 3-4 letters, only one choice remains. I don't want the computer to complement the line for me, I just want to select the highlighted proposal by typing the natural key : enter. Using the down key is not a good answer because I have to use the down key, and then type enter. Why ? no need. Enter should be enough. If the choice list is big, OK, use the down key if you want, that's a good feature. One OT point : I switched to Linux one year ago, to Mandrake then Gentoo, with KDE, and I want to express my deep respect for the work done. Very impressive. Unbelievable. And each time I submit a bug report, I have a reaction the same day. This prowess is what is achieved when people of good will unite aroud the same target. Thank you. I've looked around and found that different approaches exist : KMAIL is like the current alt-F2 autocompletion, but Thunderbird fills the missing line automatically. I understand Rainer point of view, but I think that, like in mail programs, you more or less always fill the same things in the box, so reducing the number of keystrokes for repeated tasks is good. Is it realistic to propose a customization of that? There are two schools, why should we decide? Is it complex to implement ? KDE is a very rich environment, it would not be schocking. Andre, did you try to change the Autocompletion as I mentioned above? There is already a option which does what you want. ;) (RMB on the edit field --> Text Completion --> "Dropdown & Automatic" Sorry, already there. Thank you Rainer.
