I think it would be helpful if there was a systray overlay similar to kmail/akregator indicating how many waiting messages are there. It is much less intrusive than notifications.

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
