I've just transfered all my pictures from one computer to the other, when I select to sort on date, I just see august 2004 nothing more, while the pictures are taken over the last years. 

Could this be sorted based on the exif-date?

I think images should be sorted on the image creation date from the EXIF header.
When you copy images under linux, the default behaviour is to alter the file timestamp to the current time... so when sorting on the file timestamp gets seriously screwed after copying images...

This is implemented in the experimental branch, which will be distributed eventually as digiKam 0.8. Don't hold your breaths untill that one is released, but it will arrive.

ah nice .... *waiting for 0.8*
I just wanted to report a bug about that..
but maybe add more than just exif date sorting, maybe for any exif info there is ? So you can find, for example your long time exposures, easily, and so on

That will not be for 0.8, but is of course on the todo list.

Could you also make the date to sort for selectable by user?

I took a few photos today in RAW format this afternoon and converted them to jpg later this evening. Now the RAW converter adds a modification time to the EXIF header. When importing them into digikam the filename is generated from the last modification time found in EXIF, and this determines the sort order too. As I didn´t convert the files in the order they were taken they appear in random order now. It would be great if digikam lets the user select this.
