Sentry Crash Report:

Description Martin Eitzenberger 2004-06-04 18:08:30 UTC
Version: KDE 3.2.2 (using KDE KDE 3.2.2)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
Compiler: Debian unstable KDE-Packages' one
OS: Linux

This is a major problem, aspecially for People with Notebooks:
When my laptop is hanging or restarting without correct shutdown of KDE, this could be:
- Battery power low
- Calling "halt" in console
- Unable to boot after swsusp-call

KDE is DOWN!

Many config-files (especially kdeglobal) are completely corrupted and unusable, sometimes kde can't start anymore until I make dcop for my user unable again.

I think this is not a Debian term, because it seems that this is because of open config files wich get corrupted if they are not closed proberly (e.g. when the pc is crashing or halting without correct KDE shutdown).

My hints:
- Integrated backups for all important config-files. KDE should back-up them and if the current files are corrupted after crash, they should semi-automatic be used. (Wrote non-automatic script wich is backing up important configurations once a week because I had so many data loss)
- Crash-detection and reaction: KDE should detect if the last session was closed proberly and try to find out if there is any damage...

MfG,
Martin

For KDE 3.3 we try harder to get the data to disk when saving config files.
That will hopefully fix the problems that you encounter.

Please submit a new bugreport if you continue to see this with KDE 3.3beta2 or later.
