Clicking on the canvas deliberatly selects rectangles only when nothing else is near to be selected but this is not the case with associations which can not be selected when over a rectangle.

This brings up a basic design question:
Is AssociationWidget really a UMLWidget, i.e. should it
have rectangular traits?

There's nothing rectangular about associations, but they should still have precedence over box widgets which being clicked on.
