I usually like to have my watch (i.e. [x]) tab wide so I can see more of the item data and the frame stack tab tall so I can see more of the frame depth. 

However, if I switch the tabs as shown by the yellow line in the picture, the tabs are reverted the next time when I open the project.

Yes. We simply don't save/restore those settings. It proved too buggy and was taken out. This is really a kmdi bug too.
