Version:           1.6.2 (using KDE 3.2.2,  (testing/unstable))
Compiler:          gcc version 3.3.3 (Debian 20040401)
OS:          Linux (i686) release 2.6.5

I move to debian ustable and to new kmail becouse of kontact. After upgrade when I have start kmail (with or without the kontact) kmail start to use more and more memory with every action not depending if I read not read emails or take new mails form server or send an email.
The aumount of memory used by kmail go higher and higher and at about 260 MB I have to close the kmail to free memory and have possibility to use computer.
I atach a screenshot of "top" window which show the memory use just before computer stop to answer and only start to use the hard disk heavely. I suspect that kmail not free memory it not need any more.

I had the same problem with KDE 3.2.3 (from KDE-Redhat RPMS). 

From bug 82456 (which may be a duplicate?) I got the suggestion to delete the .*.index files, and that seems to have corrected it. Memory usage is now down to 50 (from ca 200) (more on the first start, because it needed to recreate the indices).

Perhaps it would be good if there was a menu "Recreate indices".
And if kmail checked the folders somehow if they take an unusual size?
