Description Jason Louie 2004-04-09 01:57:23 UTC
Version: 3.2.1 (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
Installed from: RedHat RPMs
OS: Linux

I would like to reopen the issue of having special characters used in the sort order.

Bug 38326: kmail folder list sort order is strange

I also use a _ to prepend the folder name so that the folder is at the top of the list. This allows me to quickly access the folder and have the more important folders at the top. This option was available in Mozilla and Netscape. Not having this slows down my ability to archive my messages quickly. At the very least can this be toggled in an option somewhere?
The Linux filesystem still sorts using this method so not allowing it in kmail does hinder it's usability.

This issue is more general than KMail-related alone, and IMHO needs to be reopened. It is not (i.e. not only) duplicate of 18170. Sort order in KDE is ignoring any non-letter symbols at the begining of names.

This is consistent (and very annoying for me) across the whole KDE - in file lists, directory order, in bookmarks etc.etc. For example, directory with name "!harry" should be _before_ directory named "anna"; instead "!harry" is shown after it like "!" does not exist at all.

This should be at least configurable. Maybe somebody thinks that ignoring special symbols is "cool"... However I would like very much to get my old decent honest alphabetical sorting back.

I use KDE 3.2.3 supplied with Mandrake 10.1 for x86-64 DVD (Commercial) and 10.1 Powerpack (32-bit, Commercial).

The issue with sort order which is ignoring most "non-letter" characters at the beginning of names is still persistent in KDE (now 3.5.6) and very annoying. Some symbols (like exclamation mark "!") are deliberately ignored in sort sequence, as described in comments earlier - not only in KMail but all over KDE. This should be at least configurable, allowing to use all charset symbols allowed in names to determine sort order.

This is NOT duplicate of 18170 because of much more general character of problem with sorting order in KDE. Nor is it solved as far as I know.
