Usually artds just does it's job - no problems. I am using a 2.4.21 kernel from mantel@suse. I believe that alsa is not used (at least it is not configured). Lsmod looks like:

KDE's controlcenter says "autodetect" for the sound system, but I know that "OSS" also works. I believe that in my kernel OSS emulation is turned on. The crash occured after Kaudiocreator presented an error message saying that it could not find the encoder for the data that it had just ripped. Here is the dump:
