Description Vedran Ljubovic 2004-01-25 15:51:30 UTC
Version: RC 1 (using KDE KDE 3.2.0)
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs
OS: Linux

I think that the new icon for kppp is a big step back and that a different icon should be used, or the old one returned.

The icon in tray is higher than the others and thus gets cutted a few pixels from the top. It's also heavily pixelated, no anti-alias. Modem lights are square which is ugly. The titlebar/taskbar icon has very low contrast since it's mostly in shades of blue and gray, it's very hard to recognize, and in higher resolutions looks like a blue-grayish featureless spot.

The old icon was much better.

I have to be honest and say that I don't know what you mean...I can see the point that the icon is bad at small resolutions (and therefore crappy for the tray)....but I unfortunately I don't use Kppp. Could you include a screen shot, maybe with a small explanation of what you mean? Which icon are we talking about here? Where is it in CVS? etc...

CASE 1: Tray icon.
Location in CVS: kdenetwork/kppp/pixmaps/dock_none.png
See attachment 1 [details].
1. Icon is larger than the others (not much to say wrt the "blank paper" icon though :( ).
2. It's cut off the top. The top line is clearly missing.
3. Edges are jagged. They're not antialiased.
4. It seems as if the color depth was reduced. Continents seem jaggy and aliased.
5. LED's are very unproportional and have a squareform, thus not resembling the real thing a single bit.

Compare to the previous tray icon:
http://webcvs.kde.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/kdenetwork/kppp/pixmaps/dock_none.png?rev=1.1&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup
Simple but functional.

CASE 2: Taskbar icon
Location in CVS: kdenetwork/kppp/icons/cr16-app-kppp.png
See attachment 2 [details].
The fact that it's made entirely in shades of blue and grey makes it very unnoticable. It bears too few information. Compare with other icons in attachment 2 [details]. See how Yahoo, Mandrake and KCalc icons clearly stand out even when greyed because they are colorful. 16x16 kppp icon looks like an ink stain.

CASE 3. Menu icon
See attachment 3 [details].
Once again, this same icon looking ugly in menus

kppp ships its own icons; moving there.

This project is unfortunately no longer maintained.

If a new maintainer wants to step up and take care, the project is archived here:

https://invent.kde.org/unmaintained/kppp

You can just clone it in your private namespace on invent.kde.org and if you have started to work on it and fixed/implemented something get it reviewed and the project unarchived.

Sorry for the inconveniences.
