Description Bart Coppens 2003-09-15 22:27:04 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.3)

Would it be possible to display the size of the field viewable in the/multiple eyepiece or ccd field on the skymap? This would be quite handy to see if an object would fit on the ccd, or what you should see when looking through your eyepiece.

I have seen this feature used in the free windows program Cartes du Ciel: http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/doc/edoc1.html#oculaire

Hi,

You'll be happy to know this is already in 3.2. You can define a "FOV
symbol" (FOV=field-of-view) with a specified angular size. The angular size
is not actually printed on the map, but I think you are just asking for the
ability to draw the FOV itself. (hmm, but printing the angular size of the
symbol on the map might be interesting too...)

You can either specify an angular size directly, or enter parameters of your
telescope/eyepiece/CCD to determine the FOV. You can also choose from a
variety of symbol shapes, and set the color for each symbol.

KStars will ship with a few predefined symbols (7x35 binoculars, one-degree
crosshairs, and HST/WFPC2 field).

thanks for the request,
Jason

Hi,

Is this feature already in the first alpha version of KDE3.2? I am asking
this, because after I downloaded and compiled KStars from the ftp site, I
couldn't find options to set this up.

>(hmm, but printing the angular size of the symbol on the map might be
interesting too...)
That would indeed be an interesting option.

Thanks,
Bart

alpha1 must have been tagged just before I added it. It will definitely
be in alpha2.

Sorry about that.

Jason
