Description Sander Devrieze 2003-08-31 23:05:27 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.2)

The autoscroll functionality in Konqueror, KMail,... is too fast for some people. Because of this they have not enough time to read everything. Even if it's in its slowest modus, it's sometimes too fast.

My proposals:
1) Adding even slower modusses.
2) Bringing down the default autoscroll speed.
3) Make the default autoscroll speed configurable.

You can slow down the scrolling by hitting the arrow in the opposite direction
than the first arrow which started the scrolling.

I know that, but the problems for some people are that 1) even the slowest modus
is too fast for them and that 2) the default modus is for much people to fast to
be the default modus.

example for 1): difficult texts, texts in a difficult language for the user,
people who just can't read good.

about 2): this can be solved easily by remembering the last used speed I think.

ps: also to keep in mind: there's a big difference in time when reading texts
from a "1,000,000$" TFT screen or from a "200$" 15" screen.

The reason for the current default is because that's the slowest one that gives
a smooth scrolling (1 pixel/30ms). Going slower makes it become jerky (for me
the slowest gives me a headache, I rather increase the font size if it's too fast).
Imho, autoscrolling is esp. useful for scanning news sites, where you mostly
only read the headers.
Btw, I'm talking about khtml implementation, not about kmail

I don't have this problem: maybe some implementation problem?

Also for reading long texts IMO.

I think 1 is solved in KDE 3.2 (maybe it isn't ;)), but 3 isn't already there if I'm right.

Their should be a slider in Configuration where a user could set the default speed. Should I put this as new wish or this bug should be reopened ?

Dear user,

KHTML (and KJS) was a long time more or less unmaintained and got removed in KF6.

Please migrate to use a QWebEngine based HTML component.

We will do no further fixes or improvements to the KF5 branches of these components beside important security fixes.

For security issues, please see:

https://kde.org/info/security/

Sorry that we did not fix this issue during the life-time of KHTML.

Greetings
Christoph Cullmann
