Description virgilg 2003-07-14 20:01:49 UTC
Version: (using KDE 3.1.2)
Installed from: compiled sources
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release)
OS: Linux (i586) release 2.4.21-pre6

Hi,

I'm using the file dialog in no quick access navigation panel (F9) and no preview (F11). I want the dialog to be small so that it wouldn't occupy more than half the screen (as it is now, its length is about 660px to be displayed in its entirety, making it really cumbersome for people with 800x600 and impossible for 640 x 480). So, I resize the dialog (horisontally) to be small. However, in doing so, the drop-down box for _often-used_ directories gets shrunken down to nothing so that I can no longer see it. The icons (up, down, left, right, etc) and _half_ the charset-select drop-down box :-) are still visible.

Proposed resolution:
If the dialog box's size is reduced to minimum so that the top buttons do not fit on one row, make them split on two rows. The top row would contain the buttons / icons (up, left, right, new directory, favourites, etc.) and the bottom row would fit the often-used directories and charset-select drop-down box.

Note: you might ask: who uses 640x480 nowadays anyway? People who have difficulty reading the (too) small fonts. It's either use a higher resolution and bigger (e.g. 100dpi) fonts or use a lower resolution and smaller fonts. No matter which approach one uses, the file dialog is still too big.

Hope this helps,

Virgil

Moving from "kio/kfile" component to "kfile" product, helps sorting out duplicates.

640x480 and 800x600 are not supported screen sizes for KDE software. 1024/x78 is the minimum size.

That said, the original bug has been fixed, and you can now make the open/save dialogs *incredibly tiny* if you really want to.
