What about a possibility to set associations not only for mime types but also for protocols? For instance: 

http - mozilla
ftp - konqueror or some_cool_ftp_program
mailto - kmail or some_cool_mail_program
man - konqueror
info - konqueror or pinfo(launch in a terminal)

and so on...
