I like having the Class view around when doing C++, but I'm also manic about conserving screen estate. And the left pane seems like it can't be shrunk below a certain limit, the class names are way shorter than the width of the pane so there is a lot of empty space that I can't remove. 
Oh, this is in IDEAl mode if that changes anything.

Do you have the debugger part loaded? ( Look for an entry in the left border saying 
"Variables/Watch" ) This is probably the widget that is "too wide". 
 
I agree that this is problematic, but the UI modes are going through some significant 
changes right now. It's probably best to let that settle before tackling the minor issues.
