Under the GUI, you can change the keybindings for almost all KMail options. There are 2 events that you can't find in the GUI, so I can't change the keybindings. Moving up and down through the message line by line (not block by block as PgUP and PgDown or SPACE/ENTER). Those keys are assigned initially to UP and DOWN cursors, but there is no way to change them in the Change keybindings menu.

 I'm personally trying to change the keys so that:

 CURSOR UP / DOWN -> Scroll in the message list.
 ENTER / BACKSPACE -> Scroll 1 line in the message body
 (it would be nice if it was possible to specify the number of
lines to scroll, as in Sylpheed).
 PgUP, PgDown -> Scroll a page in message list.

 I would be able to change all this if the events: "Scroll 1 line UP in body", "Scroll 1 line down in body", "Scroll 1 page up in msg list" and "Scroll 1 page down in msg list" would be defined in the GUI in order to allow me changing them.

Well, I consider scrolling a very basic and consistent key binding that should not be changed - and probably would be difficult to change because it is in my opinion implemented in basic qt widgets.

Concerning stepping through the message list you have the functions "next message" (n) and "previous message" (p) what does exactly what you want. The keybindings are configurable here.
