Version:            (using KDE KDE 3.1)
Installed from:    Gentoo Packages
Compiler:          gcc (GCC) 3.2.1 20021207 (Gentoo Linux 3.2.1-20021207) 
OS:          Linux

Running Gentoo 1.4rc2. Installed the pre-compiled 3.0.4 KDE and compiled 3.1 KDE from the gentoo packages. When I load the KDE environment, it says:
  Could not start process Unable to create io-slave:
  klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'file'.
I get the above message when ever I open a KDE module.

When I click on the "quick" icons next to the K menu, I get:
  Could not find service 'xxx.desktop'.

Also, there are duplicate entries in the Create New ... menu option when right clicking on the desktop. There are no application entries in the K menu, only Bookmarks, recent documents, etc...

BTW, I have a similar problem on my Mandrake 9.0 KDE 3.1 install, but it says cannot start io-slave b/c too many files open... But I don't care about MDK..

I "rm ~/.kde* -Rf" and then tried to enter, but it again didn't work. No idea
why it was assigned to KDevelop...

It sounds like you have some conflicting stuff between your two installations.  This is really a 
gentoo installation problem and not a kde (or kdevelop) problem.  You should probably try the 
gentoo bug reporter.
