Description Brat Wizard 2003-02-18 03:44:55 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.99)
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs

I normally run Kmail in safe mode, ie. don't open images or allow attached scripts to run when receiving html email. For the most part (99.99% of the time) that's exactly what I want and since its spam anyway, who the heck cares what the picture is.

But, that said, it would be nice to be able to set up a private list of people (addresses) it is okay to receive html mail from, AND to have a one-time view in html menu selection (similar to "view source" but "view html" instead) that would temporarily override the restriction and display it in html.

You didn't list your kmail version, so I suspect you are on something prior to 3.1 -- in 3.1 when
you come across an HTML message, the message is displayed "as source" in the window with a
message box at the top reminding you "it may be dangerous" to view this. At the end is a "click
here" item that will render the message "right now" ["one time render", if you will -- if you navigate
away and return to it, you have to click "here" again]

What I'd like to see [if I can piggy back onto this request] is the ability to REMEMBER this
sender as someone who sends "safe" html [there are a couple of people on some mailing lists I'm
on that send html only -- I can't really fault them personally, because they are sending from a
"work" account where their employer/IT department has mandated outgoing mail should be
HTML...]

Hi there Tom-

Yes I am using KMail-3.1, but yes also I have just
upgraded so am not familiar with every feature yet.
That is a good thing to know, and thanks very much for
pointing it out. Personally, I'd still like to see a
menu assignment for it, but agree that it will get the
job done in any case as it is.

I don't mind at all adding the bit about making a
permanent per-email-address setting at that point. I
would like to see that feature also. I hope this wish
gets into the next version of K-Mail.

Thanks for the response

John

As Tom already pointed out you can already temporarily enable HTML
rendering. Please note that this only works for HTML-only messages.

And regarding the wish to add a whitelist of people for which HTML
rendering should be allowed I'd like to point out that you can enable
HTML rendering per folder via Folder->Prefer HTML to Plain Text. So you
can simply enable HTML rendering for the folder(s) where you filter the
messages sent by your friends to.

Yes, but this doesn't affect the "load content from
the net" settings. Pictures won't load. I am
requesting a feature that will temporarily (one-time)
override any default restrictions and allow the user
to view the email as html.

I have reviewed the new features in the latest versions of KMail and there is still nothing approaching the facility I am requesting...

I would like a button (or other method) to view a SINGLE message in HTML mode. That means I would be making a _conscious choice_ to override the safety feature(s) of Kmail.

I normally run Kmail with the ability to load external references turned OFF but otherwise allow HTML-formatted messages. I would like to be able to see something I like, and press a button to see the message One Time in its fully rendered form-- including external references-- without altering the normal operation of the folder or kmail.

could you please stop reopening bugs from looking at feature lists?
Comment 7 Roger Larsson 2004-04-26 12:23:59 UTC
There is a patch that handles this now, see bug 76256
