Did you check "Automatically compact folders" in the account-settings? Is your trash-folder on the imap-server? Looking at "folders", I don't see that. I have , under "On Program exit, perform the following tasks", a check mark on "Compact Folders". The Trash folder is on the local drive. -Jim Compact folders is only for local accounts. You should open your account settings (Configure-Network-Receive) and check "Automatically compact folders" otherwise the folders are not expunged. And it's better if you set the trash on the imap-server (also in the account settings) because it's much faster. Subject: Re: Messages not deleting in IMAP folders

I have two imap accounts, one at work, one at home. Both are set to
"Automatically compact folders."
I understand your point about setting the trash folder to the server,
but, having two IMAP accounts, wouldn't I run into worse problems
when I expunged from server B to the trash folder on server A than if
I just used a local trash folder?
Also, I have kmail set to delete without moving to trash.
I've been running kmail for quite a while and I don't remember seeing
this problem until vers. 1.3. I believe the earlier versions worked
correctly. I filed an earlier bug report on 1.3 and was told it would
all be fixed in 1.5, but it doesn't appear to be any different.
Just as a test, I also installed the evolution package last night and
it also seems to expunge correctly.
I really believe there is something wrong and I'd like to help. How
can I set up a test?

Don't mix expunge with delete. You can set your trash folder (the folder where deleted mails are moved) on a per account basis so account A gets a trash on it's server and account B gets one. This is just an imap copy command whereas the mail needs to be downloaded when you have a local trash. This might be related to your problem as it takes some time to download all mails. Every folder is expunged (the mails that are marked as deleted are actually removed) when you exit this folder (aka select a different folder or exit kmail). > Also, I have kmail set to delete without moving to trash. Well, you can listen to the network traffic with ethereal and see if the folder is actually expunged: Start the capture, select a folder, delete a message, go to a different folder. Stop the capture. You can attach the ethereal file to this report. Subject: Re: Messages not deleting in IMAP folders

After being buried in two projects for the last few weeks, I have
surfaced to report that kmail does, in fact, operate much better
when run as you suggest and it has solved the immediate problem.
It seems to me though, that things should work properly whatever
server has whatever folder, so there is still a problem, but I can
work around it. Expunge is still not really working on large
mailboxes, but Delete does.
Thanks for all the help,

After a short pow-wow with Carsten I close this bug, as it appears to be resolved. |
