Compiler:          gcc version 2.95.4 20020320 [FreeBSD]

start kweather with german as default language -> no go. quit kweather, switch to english us, start kweather -> works. quit kweather, switch back to german, start kweather -> no go again.

I've seen similar things reported for pre-3.1, have the fixes made it into the release?

No, this bug was fixed shortly after KDE 3.1 was released; I think this bug report 
can thus get closed.
