When you click on a mail folder that holds a large amount of messages, kmail will take a moment to sort them. Try moving the mouse during this period of time to another folder. kmail will at first open the desired folder but directly afterwards jump to the folder that's below the mouse cursor. Seems that the mouse position overrides the click position here.
