IMHO it would be a great improvement if KOrganizer was able to display icons associated with events, since they are much more intuitive then any form of color coding (which is still very nice to get the bigger picture…).  Ximian’s Evolution has a very basic implementation of this (please take a look at http://www.ximian.com/images/screenshots/evolution/schedule.png you will see them in the calendar behind the exchange server scheduling window). 

However supporting wider variety of features would not hurt:

- Every category should have an easy to recognize pictogram e.g. a birthday cake for birthdays… (as in Evolution)

- Users should be able to change the default pictograms and set their own, especially for custom categories.

- KOrganizer might even do some semi automatic icon gathering (fetching the favicon for URLs associated with an appointment/from Kaddressbook)



Possible use cases:

- Much quicker and more intuitive then color coding for most purposes.
- In case a user has more then one set of holidays (e.g. Sweden and Germany) will benefit, if a flag is shown next to the holiday indicating the applicable country (maybe only half the flag to indicate a holiday that is not observed everywhere and alpha blending used for holidays such as St. Patrick’s that won’t result in days off).
- Yahoo displays the weather forecast inside the calendar. With icons enabled all a KOrganizer plug in would have to do is creating events with the correct picture attached/linked to. (A feature I love about Evolutions executive summary btw)
- Another useful thing might be the ability to display local daylight next to the calendar (think scheduling outdoor activities). Knowing your geographical location it is not all that difficult to calculate night/dawn/day/dusk.
