Description ianp 2025-12-06 10:44:13 UTC
REQUIREMENT: Use any sync type backup program to sync files to a network share from a PC running Plasma. This should be automated for regular backups, and could be by date, or file modification detection. Sync type means if 1 file is added, that 1 file is backed up.

USERS: Many users are not IT trained, and require any user friendly method. IT tools such as CLI or other hacks will drive away such users from Plasma.

DESTINATION: The share is not mounted. But is accessible in Dolphin without problems. Likely a Samba share. But this requirement will accept any type of network connection.

ISSUES: Most Sync apps do not have navigation to a network share. The Kup backup does see the network, but then it fails to use the network share.
OBSERVED RESULT
No backup is possible. A showstopper.

EXPECTED RESULT
The user can backup without needing IT support. Just using any GUI application. Installing a new app is OK if it is not possible with built-in tools.. For example in MS Windows, navigation in most apps can see the network.
WORKAROUND: If there is a non IT, easy GUI way to mount the share permanently, this could be a workaround, But currently there is no way to mount it permanently for use in regular backups.

This problem was posed in DISCUSS last year. But no one knows of a solution.

This is not a duplicate of the 'confusing kup dialog'. This is bug has a very different issue to be resolved. The user must be able to access the network share. Which is presently a showstopper. More serious the just confusion. And might be solved by a different mechanism than the kup app.
