Description Andrew Engelbrecht 2025-10-25 18:38:17 UTC
SUMMARY

When using the super + tab key combination to switch between various applications and their open windows, the desktop image briefly fades partially in and out of view, even if the prior and next windows to display fill the screen. This causes distraction, especially if the background image has a lot of detail.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install https://github.com/openSUSE/wallpapers/blob/master/leap15/tower_lcp.jpg as your wallpaper / desktop background
2. Open a few applications (this may be more obvious when switching between applications with a light color theme)
3. Switch between applications by holding the `super` (`meta`) key and repeatedly press the `tab` key
4. Watch the bottom of the screen

OBSERVED RESULT

The detailed images of plants in the desktop image briefly fade in and out of view.

EXPECTED RESULT

It would be less distracting and visually smoother if the desktop background would not show up in areas where the desktop is not visible in the new or old window arrangement. In other words, the view ideally wouldn't fade out of the previous window to the desktop background while the new view is fading in over both.

The old view / rendered screen should fade directly into the new one. This can be achieved by rendering the previous view against the desktop (which may be partially or completely blocked by various windows) and rendering the new one against the desktop in the same way. And then fade between those two views.

If the desktop would appear in either or both views prior to, or as a result of releasing super+tab, then it would only be visible before and / or after in those specific areas, otherwise, it would ideally not appear at all.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Comment 1 Nate Graham 2025-10-29 18:52:41 UTC
Pretty sure this is the "Show selected window" option in System Settings > Window Management > Window Switcher. If you turn that off, does the issue go away?
Comment 2 Andrew Engelbrecht 2025-10-29 23:33:27 UTC
Yes, that is indeed the feature. When I turn off the "Show selected window" option in the "Task switcher" pane, the bug does not occur.
Comment 3 Nate Graham 2025-10-29 23:54:08 UTC
So to a certain extent, that's just what the feature does.

However the cross-fade between windows can probably be tweaked to not show the desktop. That's worth doing, I think.

In the meantime, you're welcome to turn off the feature.
