You don't say what browser.
You would not want Baloo to index temporary files, so if using Firefox and are indexing hidden files and folders, you should exclude the .cache and .mozilla folders.
You can follow what files Baloo is indexing if you run
$ balooctl6 monitor
You say 'Compiled from sources', that's going to make it difficult to give any proper advice. However check whether Baloo is repeatedly crashing, that would certainly load the system and make browsing (or anything) slow. It might be that a single file is triggering the failure, Baloo is trying to indexing it and crashing, then trying again...
