wifi applet using incorrect icon, and below a terminal pinging 1.1.1.1 to prove device is connected to internet

SUMMARY
I use proton vpn, and it has a feature where it allows to enable a killswitch. When i activate it, the wifi icon shows as not connected (see image), even though i am connected to a wifi.
Problem is specific to when a killswitch is enabled, the icon works correctly when the killswitch is not enabled.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. enable killswitch in proton vpn options
2. connect to vpn

OBSERVED RESULT
The wifi applet shows an incorrect icon (shows the icon of when wifi is disconnected)

EXPECTED RESULT
The wifi applet should show that wifi is connected via vpn
