Description dajomu 2025-10-12 17:23:40 UTC
When taking a screenshot in Spectacle, the captured image is first shown in the main window with options such as “Save”, “Copy”, or “Open in Editor.”

For users who frequently annotate screenshots (e.g., crop, blur, or highlight areas), it would be much more efficient to have an option to open directly in the editor right after capture — skipping the intermediate Spectacle window.

Proposed Behavior

Add a setting in Settings → General (or Save & Launch tab):

“Open editor immediately after taking screenshot”

When enabled, Spectacle should automatically launch the editor window immediately after a capture.

Works for all capture modes (rectangular, window, full screen, etc.).

Benefits

Streamlines workflows for frequent editors.

Reduces extra clicks.

Brings Spectacle in line with other modern screenshot tools (like Flameshot or Windows Snipping Tool).

Example Use Case

A user quickly takes a region screenshot and wants to blur a sensitive field or draw an arrow — the editor should open instantly without needing to click “Open in Editor.”

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
OS: Ubuntu 25.04
KDE Plasma: 6.4.5
Qt Version: 6.8.3
Spectacle: 6.4.5

After making a selection in the export menu there is a list of all applications that can handle editing.

Users aren't going to want to always open an editor and a setting that requires you to set/unset the setting ahead of time always ends up being something that sounds like a nice idea, but ends up being unusable if you actually have it.
