Description AndreSmit 2002-11-17 16:23:04 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.4)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: GCC 3.2 Gentoo Linux 1.4 Release Candidate 1
OS: Linux

I don't know where i should report this, so i could be on the wrong place.

I have a multimedia keyboard (logitech Internet keyboard) and i would like to use the multimedia and internet keys. I know there are several programms which can provide these functions, but for normal desktop users, that's way to difficult to install. Even me, as a more experienced user, it is difficult.

I would be pleased if this could be integrated into KDE. For example, the Microsoft and the Logitech keyboards are very famous and many people have one of these, an extra screen on the configuration wizard on KDE's first start to let the user allow configuration of the keyboard (manufacturer, etc.) and OSD (On Screen Display) when a button has been pressed.

My Home should launch the browser (if not already running) and go to the opening page. E-mail, should launch KMail for example and volume up/down should raise and lower the volume with a bar on the screen to let the user see how the volume is doing.

I'm not reporting this wish because of myself, but for many other people who start working with Linux/KDE and would like to use their multimedia keys.

I will be very pleased if something of this kind could be arranged in the upcoming KDE 3.1.

Thanks a lot!

This already works; it's just not very obvious how to do it. Here are instructions:

1) Go into KDE Control Center : Regiional & Accessibility : Keyboard Layout
2) Check "Enable keyboard layouts"
3)Choose your keyboard model (or as close as possible) from the list.
4) Voila! Open KMenuEdit and assign multimedia key to different apps.

Here are some tips:
 - Run the command "xset dpms force standby" for sleep
 - In konqueror, go Settings : Configure Shortcuts, there find such things as "Back",
"Forward", "Stop", etc. and assign the multimedia key as the alternate key.

Could someone add something like the following as a tip for KDE startup?:
"If you have a keyboard with multimedia keys on the top you can get them to work
by..."

Thanks for your report ; I think you can close this bug now.

Well, i have a Logitech Itouch keyboard and after selecting the right keyboard, everything works
except internet and multimedia keys. Unfortunately. I think this one can be kept open...

agree, this doesn't work -- and it should

If you selected the right keyboard and it didn't work, then you didn't select the right keyboard. But those keyboard maps come with X server and as such this has nothing to do with KDE, complain to X devels if you can't find a keyboard map which would work for you.
