SUMMARY
In order to quickly put my clips on the timeline and avoid dragging them, I often use the "v" shortcut key. On Kdenlive 24.12.3 doing this will correctly insert the chosen clip to Video Track 1 and Audio Track 1. 

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Kdenlive's latest git version and add an MPEG clip to the Project Bin
2. With the clip selected on the Project Bin, press the "v" key on your keyboard
3. 

OBSERVED RESULT
Pressing "v" in the latest git build will insert the chosen clip to Track 2 for video and Track 1 for Audio. In the timeline the clip now looks like it's fixed and you cannot drag the Video down to Track 1. You can do that only if you ungroup the clip.

EXPECTED RESULT
When pressing the "v" shortcut key, insert the clip on the timeline at the selected/active track (by going with the up/down arrow keys on the timeline) instead of defaulting to Track 2.

Correct, default should be to insert in the lowest video track, I will fix it. You can however change the insert track by clicking in the target rectangle on the left of the arrow to collapse a track. This zone will become green and the track will be used for insert operation. You can also activate it by clicking Shift+T to mark the current track as target. You can also independently move only the video (or audio) component of a gtoup by selecting it withg ALT+Click. Then you can move it freely.
